Spend a night in Mendocino ... and help restore the Mendocino Headlands
The Mendocino Area Parks Association (MAPA), California State Parks, and the Inns and B&Bs of Mendocino have entered into a unique public-private partnership to raise money for the Mendocino Headlands State Park. In this partnership, participating Inns and B&Bs are asking their guests to make a small contribution, one percent of the room rate, to the Campaign for the Headlands. Donations are voluntary, and guests may opt out. The Inns will turn the funds over to MAPA, which is a cooperating association with California State Parks. Funds raised through this program will be used to restore the Park's historical and natural resouces, and improve public facilities.
Our goal is to raise enough money to carry out some needed repairs at Mendocino Headlands State Park, including preserving the historic Ford House:
Replace the broken shingles and leaky roof
Paint the house
Replace or repair the foundation
Repair the floors, paint the interior of the house
Update the 25-year old exhibits about the history of Mendocino
Increase routine maintenance
We will also do projects that will improve the visitor experience at the Headlands, including:
Increased routine maintenance of restrooms and trails
Replace the roof on the restroom building (the most-used public restroom in the town of Mendocino)
Improve access for people with disabilities
Repair eroded trails
Repair fencing
Conserve timbers from 19th century logging operations
Install new interpretive signs
Install new trash and recycling bins
Clear out invasive exotic plants and develop a vegetation management plan
Develop on-line downloadable guided tours and interpretive audio and video programs.
This program has proven successful at some of the most famous lodges in National Parks, including the Grand Canyon. It has also been in place for two years at Silver Strand State Beach in San Diego. That program, a partnership with Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Spa, raises about $200,000 each year. These funds augment the operating budget of Silver Strand State Beach. Everyone -- hotel guests, beachgoers, hotel management -- benefits from this arrangement.
